September - Septembre

It's September, still hot in Texas. Nothing's better to fresh you up than a home-made sherbet with organic raspberries. My part of the game is to enjoy it. For the recipe by Françoise, order the post card at http://www.zazzle.com/raspberry_sorbet_greeting_card-137029197600924172

Revenge is a dish best served cold!

Memories… When we arrived in Snyder, West Texas, at the beginning of 1983, our youngest daughter Virginie was a little bit over 7. She joined the local elementary school. A few days later, her teacher called Françoise and told her that our daughter would have to go one level down because she did not understand English and could not write it.  Sweet revenge, a few years later while a Senior in a private High School in Austin, Texas where her mom had been hired as a French teacher, Virginie participated in a Texas Creative Writing Contest and brought the trophy home!  I still have the text Virginie wrote and enjoy it each time I read it, it was in 1992, she vas 17, read on:

" CLICK "

There's nothing worse than coming home from the harsh reality of the 90's to be exposed to nothing more than heavy-duty brainwashing...  otherwise known as television.  No, I mean really!  Let's say I had a tough day at work; everyone was getting on my case, I was behind on my work, my secretary was sick, I didn't get that raise I was hoping for, and to top it all off, the coffee machine broke.  So, I'm in a really bad mood, right?  Well, by the time I get home I'm obviously exhausted, not to mention hungry, depressed, frustrated, a little angry, etc. etc.  So what's the first thing I do?  I plop down in my comfy couch, grab that remote and "click"; the second that television turns on my brain turns off.

The point is, television is nothing more than an escape from reality.  But the worst part is, those television people hiding behind that screen are nothing more than modern con-artists.  They sit back there with a crooked grin, trying to figure out how to best make their product attractive to their audience... which isn't all that hard to do, since no thinking skills are needed to watch television.  In other words, whatever the tube says become the audience's thoughts.  Like I said earlier, it's BRAINWASHING.

Imagine this: the screen is black.  Little by little, a dim light appears and reveals a shiny, black, beautiful Chrysler.. It's slowly, seductively rotating on a platform.  Then, a smooth, baritone voice tells you all about the luxuries this car offers: AM/FM stereo, CD player, air conditioning and heating, all-leather interior... After each statement, another voice responds in a pleasantly surprised tone: "Wow!"  Until soon enough, that pleasantly surprised voice becomes your own... "Wow!"

Now imagine this: a young man (thin, tall, extremely good-looking, black hair, blue eyes, etc.) is walking along on some college campus, minding his own business, until suddenly a group of 3 or 4 girls (also thin and attractive) run up to him, and start laughing and talking with him.  One of them winks at him and says: "What are those Bugle Boy Jeans you're wearing?"  At that moment it dawns on all of you guys out there: "I've got to get me some of those!"  Not quite sure whether you mean the jeans...

I could cite endless examples, but I think that would be unnecessary.  What I'm trying to get across here is that television is constantly trying to con its viewers into buying certain products through images that seem attractive, but that actually are not real.  Earlier I was describing a realistic hard day at work...  Well, everything isn't suddenly going to be dandy if I just drink French Roast Coffee before going to work the next day, or if I wear that particular brand of shoes, or if I drive that Chrysler, or whatever.  And no, my cat isn't going to suddenly burst with energy and stop sleeping all day just because I got him some of that scientifically-proven, 100% nutritionally balanced cat food with nuggets on the shape of little fishes and chicken drumsticks...  My cat could care less!  He'll still sleep all day.

According to television, everything is the best thing in the world.  Whatever product is being advertised in a particular commercial, THAT ONE'S THE BEST!  Why?  Well, they ran a survey, it's proven, and everyone will love you if you buy this, and look, isn't it pretty, too?  Ironically, the next commercial that comes on could easily be the former one's greatest competition and guess what?  Suddenly THIS one's the best.

As Neil Postman said in Amusing Ourselves to Death, "On television the politician does not so much offer the audience an image of himself, as offer himself as an image of the audience."  Of course, here he's talking about politicians; but then again, what's the difference?  They're ALL politicians!  They're all trying to tell you what to do, how to act, what to wear, what to eat...  And in so doing, they're actually presenting you with what could easily become an image of yourself.  When you see that person on the screen (young, energetic, good-looking), it's easy enough to start thinking "this could be me, yes, I could look just like that, if only..."  And then whatever product is being advertised pops on the screen presenting itself as a sudden illumination, a solution for a better life.  That's what politicians do by the way; they pop up on that screen directly connected to your brain, and try to present themselves as a sudden illumination, a solution for a better life...  And of course whatever they say is in your best interest, and whoever you are, you're first on their list.

But it doesn't work that way, folks.  Politics beside the point, though tightly related, all those cars, jeans, shoes, those different foods, that particular shampoo, and yes, that cute cat food, ... they're not real.  Oh sure, you can run to H.E.B. and ya, they'll be there, sitting in some obscure aisle waiting for you, beckoning to you... But once you buy that product and take it home, it suddenly loses that magic the tube so devilishly promised.  Suddenly it's just another product you were conned into buying.  And suddenly you're face-to-face, once again, with reality.  Maybe that's why people today are so hooked on TV; because reality is getting harsher and harder to handle day after day.  Television provides such an easy escape into some ideal world where everything is beautiful and where any problem can be resolved, whereas in the real world, problems all too often just get worse.

But ignoring reality by turning off your brain with that "click" of the remote is not going to solve all your problems.  All those advertisers in that box of images are obviously trying to present their product as the ideal product for you, when in fact, it's just another product.  Granted, there are some products out there that are better than others (usually the more expensive ones.)  But the point is, television will never tell you which one is actually, REALLY the best one.  You've just got to go out there yourself and figure that out on your own.

Go ahead, turn on the tube, turn your brain off, relax, sit back, enjoy the ride.  But when you turn it off, don't forget to turn your brain back on!

About a beer?

From "Journal of Natural Health" (August 2014 issue), by Dr Nan Fuchs: "Betsy Stanford is 107 years old. She lives in a third-floor walk up apartment in Washington D.C.

She walks up and down the stairs to get her mail. She cooks and cleans for herself. She even goes to the movies with her friends.

So when a reporter from The Washington Post asked Betsy how she kept her body so strong, she said, "I drink beer. It's good for you, baby!"

Well, why not?… Let's have a wonderful beer and enjoy our old days!

Until next time,

Jack

Boiling water in a microwave – Eau bouillante et four micro-ondes

I feel that the following is information that any one who uses a microwave oven to heat water should be made aware of. One day, a young man of 26 according to the story found on the Internet, decided to have a cup of instant coffee. He took a cup of water and put it in the microwave to heat it up (something that many people do all the time). I am not sure how long he set the timer for but he wanted to bring the water to a boil. When the timer shut the oven off, he removed the cup from the oven. As he looked into the cup he noted that the water was not boiling but instantly the water in the cup "blew up" into his face. The cup remained intact until he threw it out of his hand but all the water had flew out into his face due to the buildup of energy. His whole face was blistered and he had 1st and 2nd degree burns to his face which may leave scarring. He also may have lost partial sight in his left eye.

While at the hospital, the doctor who was attending to him stated that this a fairly common occurrence and water (alone) should never be heated in a microwave oven. If water is heated in this manner, something should be placed in the cup to diffuse the energy such as a wooden stir stick, tea bag after taking the staple off (if any), etc. It is however a much safer choice to boil the water in a tea kettle.

Origins: Exploding water? In a nutshell, yes, water can "explode" in the fashion described above. However, it takes near perfect conditions to bring this about, thus "exploding water" is not something the average hot beverage drinker who would otherwise now be eyeing his microwave with trepidation need fear. Odds are, you'll go through life without ever viewing this phenomenon first-hand, and if you're one of the rare few who does get to see it, you will likely not be harmed by the experience (that would take your standing right over the cup at the instant it happened, and the liquid's bolting up and hitting your skin).

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has advised consumers: This type of phenomenon occurs if water is heated in a clean cup. If foreign materials such as instant coffee or sugar are added before heating, the risk is greatly reduced. If superheating has occurred, a slight disturbance or movement such as picking up the cup, or pouring in a spoon full of instant coffee, may result in a violent eruption with the boiling water exploding out of the cup.

Memories, memories…

A few weeks ago, searching the Internet to find out if some old Stampe aircrafts such as the one I was flying in 1964 (see picture at the top of my blog) were still flying, I found a French site with plenty of them. I sent a message to the contact person and, following his request, I sent him two pictures, including the above one showing the aircraft number F-BCOY as seen on its tail.

The reply I received told me that "my" Stampe was still flying in U.K. under the number G-BAKN, giving me a British Website to find it. I found the aeroplane repainted in red. Again I contacted the person in charge of this site. The reply I received gave me the name and address of the current English owner.

I immediately wrote to the owner and received a very nice letter from him last month with a picture of his beautiful red Stampe that you can admire at the beginning of this article. This aircraft, originally built in France in 1946, has been totally restored and is still flying. His owner told me that he made several trips to France with this aircraft.

This story brought wonderful memories to me.

A short joke before closing:
Walking back home, a mother and her little boy pass by their good-looking young neighbor.
- The mother tells her son to say "Hi" to the lady and to give her a little kiss.
- "NO!" the little boy said.
- "But why not?" his mother asked him.
- "Daddy tried to do it yesterday and she slapped him in the face!"

Until next time,
Jack

Jack

Grogs

Grogs against bronchitis and cold
I recently suffered through a severe bought of bronchitis. When with the best of intentions our family doctor prescribed antibiotics and other medications, I had to ask myself if there existed friendlier solutions to heal myself, and I remembered an excellent remedy: a grog!

Several recipes are available, according to everyone's taste. Like my father used to say, "There’s nothing like a good grog to kill microbes!" He recommended grogs and hot wines against chills and developing colds.

First of all, hot beverages are recommended. In addition to hydrating in order to render mucus less viscous and relieve a sore throat, "the act of drinking warm liquids allows our organism to raise the body's temperature, resulting in intense transpiring which in turn helps  eliminate and dilapidate toxins more rapidly and more effectively," as explained by Dr. Henry Puget, a family doctor.

The traditional grog
Before going any further, what is a grog?  It's a home remedy that helps lessen the symptoms of a cold. It's a mixture of rum and boiling water, more or less 10-20% rum (rum can also be substituted with whisky, cognac, calvados, etc.). Add honey, sugar or lemon to taste. Then drink it very hot. Once done with the grog, one is advised to go straight to bed, so as to add the benefits of rest to those of the grog.

The beneficial effects associated with a grog are maximized when it is consumed hot, which is also calming and comforting. Sugar from a lemon or from honey added to the grog diminishes throat irritation.

Important: do not consume a grog with medications because it contains alcohol.

Is alcohol indispensable?
If the only concern is trying to keep a light cold from worsening into potential bronchitis, then an alcohol-free grog might do the trick.

To make a microbe-fighting herbal tea:
- Press one whole lemon in a soup bowl,
- Fill the bowl with boiling water,
- Add a tablespoon of honey.
As much as possible, use organic products. Additives will not help, just the opposite!

When the grog is ready, put on your pajamas, go to bed and wrap yourself in a blanket or a large towel. Drink your tea and lie still. The goal is to perspire. This will feel like a severe fever. That's a good sign, recovery is on the way!

Other recipes based on effective ingredients:
- Lemon. "Its critical acid and its vitamin C have anti-inflammatory properties and fight infection," as emphasized by a doctor. Don't heat the lemon; add it at the last minute.
- Cinnamon. Its essential oil has strong anti-bacterial properties.
- Clove. It's a powerful anti-inflammatory and pain reducer.
- Thyme. Anti-spasm and fights infections.

4 recipes for influenza-fighting tonics
- Hot wine: Heat (without boiling) one liter (1.760 pints) of red wine (a "côtes-du-rhône" would be best) with a tablespoon of sugar, and 15 grams of cinnamon. Rich in alcohol, thus calorific, it contains natural antibiotics, minerals and phenols, which will help to fight the infection. Add bits of lemon peel. Drink a glass every 4 hours when fighting the flu or a cold.
- Hot champagne: Heat (never boil) one glass of champagne with a teaspoon of sugar. Drink at night before going to bed.
- Alcohol-free grog: Boil a large cup of water for three minutes with 2 cloves, 2 aniseed-tree fruits, 1 stick of cinnamon.
Add a wedge of lemon or the juice of half a lemon, and let sit for a few minutes.
Filter and add honey to taste.
- Hot alcohol-free wine: Heat 1 liter of alcohol-free red wine for 3 to 5 minutes with 100 grams of sugar, 1 stick of cinnamon, 2 aniseed-tree fruits, 2 cloves, a little bit of grated nutmeg and the peel of half a lemon and half an orange.
Add a wedge of orange or lemon; drink hot.

A couple thoughts about ice water
I don’t know about other countries, but in the United States, as soon as you are seated in a restaurant, the waiter or waitress brings you a large glass—and by “large” I mean really large (often 16 oz. or more)—packed with ice cubes and water. I suppose that it is nice to have a cold drink, especially in the summer time. Cold water, however, and of course ice water, congeals absorbed food and fat, and slows down the digestion process. Really not a good idea.
The Chinese and Japanese drink hot tea with their meals. It would be better to adopt a similar habit when we eat.
The "goop" formed by ice water on consumed food reacts negatively with stomach acid, and is then absorbed into the intestinal tract faster than solid aliments. This “goop” clings to the intestinal walls and eventually becomes converted into fats, which can lead to cancer. I must say that, without even knowing what problem can be caused by ice water, I simply don't like it and cannot drink it. As far as I am concerned, tea is not my favorite drink. A glass of good-quality red wine at room temperature is my "cup of tea".

Visitors – I took the above picture without opening our back glass door a few days ago. They come around almost every morning and late in the afternoon, sometimes 8, 9 or 10 of them.
Until next time,
Jack

Bonjour amis francophiles.
