I feel that the following is information that any one who uses a microwave oven
to heat water should be made aware of. One day, a young man of 26 according to
the story found on the Internet, decided to have a cup of instant coffee. He
took a cup of water and put it in the microwave to heat it up (something that many
people do all the time). I am not sure how long he set the timer for but he wanted
to bring the water to a boil. When the timer shut the oven off, he removed the
cup from the oven. As he looked into the cup he noted that the water was not
boiling but instantly the water in the cup "blew up" into his face.
The cup remained intact until he threw it out of his hand but all the water had
flew out into his face due to the buildup of energy. His whole face was
blistered and he had 1st and 2nd degree burns to his face which may leave
scarring. He also may have lost partial sight in his left eye.
While at the hospital, the doctor who was attending to him stated that this a fairly common occurrence and water (alone) should never be heated in a microwave oven. If water is heated in this manner, something should be placed in the cup to diffuse the energy such as a wooden stir stick, tea bag after taking the staple off (if any), etc. It is however a much safer choice to boil the water in a tea kettle.

Exploding
water? In a nutshell, yes, water can "explode" in the fashion
described above. However, it takes near perfect conditions to bring this about,
thus "exploding water" is not something the average hot beverage
drinker who would otherwise now be eyeing his microwave with trepidation need
fear. Odds are, you'll go through life without ever viewing this phenomenon
first-hand, and if you're one of the rare few who does get to see it, you will
likely not be harmed by the experience (that would take your standing right
over the cup at the instant it happened, and the liquid's bolting up and
hitting your skin).
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has advised consumers: This type of phenomenon occurs if water is heated in a clean cup. If foreign materials such as instant coffee or sugar are added before heating, the risk is greatly reduced. If superheating has occurred, a slight disturbance or movement such as picking up the cup, or pouring in a spoon full of instant coffee, may result in a violent eruption with the boiling water exploding out of the cup.

Memories, memories…
A few weeks ago, searching
the Internet to find out if some old Stampe aircrafts such as the one I was
flying in 1964 (see picture at the top of my blog) were still flying, I found a
French site with plenty of them. I sent a message to the contact person and,
following his request, I sent him two pictures, including the above one showing
the aircraft number F-BCOY as seen on its tail.
The reply I received
told me that "my" Stampe was still flying in U.K. under the number
G-BAKN, giving me a British Website to find it. I found the aeroplane repainted
in red. Again I contacted the person in charge of this site. The reply I received
gave me the name and address of the current English owner.
I immediately wrote to
the owner and received a very nice letter from him last month with a picture of
his beautiful red Stampe that you can admire at the beginning of this
article. This aircraft, originally built in France in 1946, has been totally
restored and is still flying. His owner told me that he made several trips to
France with this aircraft.
This story brought
wonderful memories to me.

Le coin francophile : Eau bouillante et four micro-ondes
Faire bouillir
de l'eau dans un four micro-ondes peut être risqué. J'ai trouvé cette affaire sur l'Internet. Un jour, un jeune homme
de 26 ans avait envie d'une tasse de café instantané. Il a mis sa tasse pleine
d'eau dans son four micro-ondes pour la porter à ébullition (ce que beaucoup de
gens font à maintes reprises). L'histoire ne précise pas comment il avait réglé
la minuterie, mais sans doute avait-il prévu suffisamment de temps pour faire
bouillir l'eau. Lorsque la minuterie s'est arrêtée, il a enlevé sa tasse du
four et a remarqué que l'eau ne bouillait pas. Puis l'eau de la tasse a
soudainement "explosé", éclaboussant son visage. La tasse semblait
normale jusqu'à ce que toute l'eau lui éclate au visage par suite d'une
accumulation d'énergie. Il a subi des brûlures au premier et deuxième degrés au
visage, lequel restera probablement marqué. Il a en outre perdu partiellement
la vision de l'œil gauche.
Lorsqu'il
est arrivé à l'hôpital, le médecin lui a dit que c'était un fait courant et que
l'eau seule ne devrait JAMAIS être réchauffée au four micro-ondes. Si on veut
chauffer de l'eau de cette manière, quelque chose d'autre doit être mis dans
la tasse, tel un bâtonnet de bois ou une pochette de thé (sans agrafe
métallique), afin de diffuser l'énergie. En fait, c'est bien moins dangereux
d'employer une bonne vieille bouilloire !
Explication : Ce phénomène est connu sous le nom de sur-échauffement. Il faut toutefois réunir des conditions parfaites pour que ce phénomène se produise. De l'eau qui "explose" n'est pas quelque chose dont la moyenne des gens feront l'expérience. Il y a de fortes chances que cela ne vous arrive jamais ou, si cela arrive, que vous en sortirez indemnes, à moins d'avoir le visage juste au-dessus de la tasse à l'instant même de l'explosion.
D'après la FDA (service administratif américain
du contrôle des aliments et médicaments), ce type de phénomène se produit plus
particulièrement avec l'emploi d'un récipient neuf. De plus, si un corps
étranger est mis dans la tasse avant de la placer dans le four, du café
instantané ou du sucre par exemple, le risque est grandement réduit. Ce qui se
produit est que l'eau se réchauffe plus rapidement que les bulles de vapeur qui
peuvent se former, empêchant le liquide de bouiller. Le liquide chauffe à
l'excès, dépassant son point d'ébullition. Lorsque la tasse d'eau est
déplacée soudainement, ou quand y plonge
une cuillerée de café instantané, un choc thermique violent se produit faisant
jaillir le contenu de la tasse.

Souvenirs, souvenirs…
Il y a quelque temps, je cherchais sur
l'Internet si des Stampe, comme celui que le pilotais en 1964 et dont la photo
figure en tête de mon blog, volaient encore, J'ai abouti à un site français contenant
de très nombreuses photographies de Stampe. J'ai contacté la personne en charge
qui m'a demandé de lui envoyer des photos indiquant le matricule de l'appareil,
F-BCOY visible sur la gouverne arrière de l'avion.
La réponse que j'ai reçue précisait que
"mon" Stampe volait toujours en Angleterre, désormais sous la
matricule G-BAKN, me donnant le site anglais où en trouver des photos. J'ai bien
sûr trouvé mon vieux Stampe repeint en rouge. J'ai encore une fois pris contact
avec la personne responsable du site anglais, qui m'a répondu aussitôt me
donnant le nom et l'adresse du propriétaire britannique actuel de l'appareil.
La lettre envoyée au propriétaire a été suivie
d'une très sympathique réponse accompagnée d'une jolie photo de son Stampe que
vous pouvez admirer en tête de l'article de ce jour. Cet appareil, construit en
France en 1946, a été totalement restauré et vole toujours. Son propriétaire a
fait plusieurs voyages en France à ses commandes.
Cette affaire a rafraîchi ma mémoire avec de magnifiques
souvenirs.
