Françoise and I climbed another step of the ladder, becoming great grandparents
of a strong baby-boy, Greyson (20" and 8lbs 5oz.). I don’t know the origin
of his name—Greyson—which could mean “Son of a man with grey hair.” This little
guy, as you can see, already has plenty of very dark hair, like his dad. So, I
suppose that my explanation about the origin of his name is not correct… Congratulations
to his parents, Catherine and Christopher, for giving us a gorgeous great grandson.
To celebrate this
event, I found a piece of music of original Ragtime, a sparkling style that
inspires joy and exuberance, like a bottle of Champagne that, regretfully, we
could not take to the hospital to welcome Greyson due to the current pandemic
situation—a tradition that we observed in the past for our grandchildren. So,
here we go with a piece by the famous jazz piano player, Claude Bolling (who
celebrated his 90th birthday last April), a piece composed by Jelly
Roll Morton (1890-1941) and recorded by Claude Bolling in this video in 1966
(just skip the advertising). When we lived in Paris, Françoise and I had gotten
into the habit of going to see Claude Bolling every month play perfect Rag at “Le
Petit Journal,” a cabaret close to the Luxembourg Palace. We became regulars at
Le Petit Journal and, once in a while, at the end of his show, had a drink at
the bar with Claude Bolling who, one time, gave me a signed 33rpm disc that I
still have but cannot play anymore, as I no longer have a turn table… I hope

Le 16 mai dernier nous a fait, à Françoise et
moi, prendre du grade, faisant de nous des arrière-grands-parents d'un solide
petit garçon, Greyson (50,8 cm et 3,77 kg). Je ne connais pas l'origine de ce
prénom, Greyson, qui pourrait se traduire en mot à mot : fils d'un homme aux
cheveux gris. Ce petit bonhomme, comme vous pouvez le constater, est déjà bien
ornementé de poils bien noirs, comme son papa. Alors, je suppose que mon
explication à la recherche de l'origine de son nom est erronée… Félicitations à
ses parents, Catherine et Christopher, pour nous avoir donné un si magnifique
arrière-petit-fils.
Pour célébrer l'évènement, j'ai trouvé un
morceau de musique de Ragtime original, un style pétillant qui inspire joie et
exubérance, comme une bouteille de Champagne que, bien malheureusement, nous
n'avons pas pu apporter à la clinique pour souhaiter la bienvenue à Greyson,
par suite de la pandémie en cours, une tradition que nous avions pu honorer
dans le passé pour nos petits-enfants. Voici donc ce morceau par le fameux
pianiste de jazz Claude Bolling (qui a célébré ses 90 ans au mois d'avril
dernier), morceau composé par Jelly Roll Morton (1890-1941) et enregistré par
Claude Bolling pour cette vidéo en 1966 (désolé pour la publicité… on ne peut
plus faire sans !). Quand nous habitions Paris, Françoise et moi avions pris
l'habitude d'aller voir Claude Bolling tous les mois jouer du parfait rag au
Petit Journal, un cabaret tout près du Luxembourg. Nous étions devenus des
habitués du Petit Journal et parfois, restions après le spectacle trinquer au
bar avec Claude Bolling qui, à une occasion, me fit cadeau d'un 33 tours muni
de son autographe que, malheureusement, je ne peux plus écouter, ne possédant
